The Right Way to Improve Pond Sediment
Pond sediment is one of the most overlooked yet consequential factors in the farming environment. Leftover feed, waste, and dead algae that accumulate on the bottom undergo anaerobic fermentation, continuously releasing ammonia, nitrite, and hydrogen sulfide — which is exactly why some ponds show "fine" water quality readings while shrimp and crab keep running into trouble.
Sediment treatment should be scheduled proactively, not reactively once the bottom has already turned black and smelly. We recommend establishing a routine sediment-conditioning rhythm during peak feeding periods, generally every 5-12 days, adjusting the interval based on stocking density and feed volume — higher density and heavier feeding mean a greater sediment burden and a need for more frequent treatment.
There are two product approaches worth alternating between: chemical oxidizers (such as potassium monopersulfate or potassium ferrate compounds) offer strong, fast-acting oxidation, suited to sediment that has already turned visibly black or foul and needs quick treatment; biological decomposers (Bacillus and nitrifying bacteria blends) work more gently but continuously reactivate the sediment's micro-ecology, making them better suited to routine preventive maintenance. Alternating both often outperforms sticking to one — chemical oxidation solves the immediate problem while biological decomposition sustains long-term balance.
For ponds that haven't been cleaned in years or carry deep sludge layers, sediment treatment results will be noticeably diminished. In these cases, extend the treatment course and pair it with a thorough pond cleaning, tilling and sun-drying — product treatment alone rarely resolves years of accumulated sediment issues in the short term.
One final practical tip: apply sediment conditioners on sunny mornings with aerators running — this noticeably improves results, while application during rainy weather or low-oxygen conditions tends to underperform.
