How to Handle Elevated Ammonia and Nitrite in Aquaculture Ponds

By the mid-to-late culture stage, many farmers hit the same wall: water color still looks fine, but a test reveals ammonia and nitrite have quietly crept past safe levels. The usual cause is a mismatch between feeding rate and the pond's self-purification capacity, as leftover feed and waste build up over time.

Step one is judging severity accurately. Mild elevation (nitrite 0.1-0.3 mg/L) can often be brought down gradually by increasing microbial conditioner dosage alongside aeration. Moderate-to-severe elevation (above 0.5 mg/L) calls for a targeted nitrite-reducing product, which typically shows clear results within 48-96 hours without rebounding.

Step two is controlling the source. Many farmers only think about water conditioning after a problem appears, but the more effective approach is to treat sediment improvement as routine maintenance — accumulated waste on the pond floor is the ongoing source of ammonia and nitrite, and treating the water column alone without the sediment leads to recurring issues. We recommend applying a sediment conditioner every 10-12 days, increasing the dose for aged or deep-water ponds.

Step three is emergency support. During sharp water quality swings, shrimp and crab stress resistance drops noticeably — an anti-stress nutritional supplement at this point helps them get through the adjustment period with less risk of silent mortality or soft-shell issues.

One important caution: don't stack multiple products with different mechanisms at once when treating ammonia/nitrite issues — it makes it hard to tell what's actually working.
